THE QUILTER
|
|
|
 |
Monarch Knitting & Quilts opened for business on
June 6th, 1996. We saw a need for a knitting store in
Pacific Grove; There hadn't been a store here for
more than 7 years. The store is owned by
Joan Williams, who as you can tell fron the
photo, started knitting at an early age. While she's a
knitting fanatic, her mother turned to quilting
some 35 years ago.
Joan is a member of the Knitting Guild of America
and founder of the Monterey Peninsula Knitter's Guild.
Before opening the knitting store she spent 15 years
in Television News in New York, San Francisco,
Minneapolis and Salinas, Ca. |
|
Joan's mom, the late Mrs.Elizabeth
Purdy, was the master quilter
responsible for all the quilts, wall
hangings, quilted vests and home
decorating items that are carried in the
store. She quilted for 35 years and in
that time became very accomplished in the craft.
She was born in Toledo, Ohio which is
the reason she used the Toledo Star on
her business card. She lived in
Minnesota and spent many a long
winter night at her art. Her work is so
prized in the mid-west that several of her
quilts are on the beds of the Historic St.
James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota.
All who see her work marvel at how
intricate and even her hand quilting is.
All her quilts soon become family
heirlooms .

THE GREETERS
|
|
|
|
Meet Sakura (Japanese for Cherry Blossom). She is a 7 year old Siberian
Husky that we adopted from the Central Coast Northern Dog Rescue
Organization in 2005. And her assistant Snickers, a 2 year old chiweenie
(chihuahua/dachshund mix) adopted in August 2008 from the Animal Friends
Rescue Project. Both very happy to make the acquaintance of all who enter
the store. Tummy rubs always welcome. |

Cappy was the official store greeter from the
day we opened for business. He even got a
mention in "Stitch N Bitch Nation". He loved
everyone, everyone loved him, especially kids.
He was extremely gentle, his 75 lb. body
was all heart. A 2 year old stray when he
came into our lives, he gave us 11 years of
unconditional love. He is still missed.
